Gerard was enjoying his life. He was doing what he loved, making music, and doing it with his favorite little brother. When the virus hit music was the last thing on his mind. Him and Mikey rushed home to be at their mother's bedside until her passing. He thought about staying at home but didn't like the idea of his brother going to Los Angeles all by himself, especially when neither one of them knew what they'd find once they arrived. Like the condition of Mikey's boyfriend. So Gerard followed his brother. He wanted to support Mikey in every way possible.
